Abstract: This thesis covers the conservation and restoration of unpainted sculptures made of gypsum. It describes damages and reasons thereof, also some options for the treatment. Additionally, some facts about gypsum as material, its characteristics and processes of production are being delivered.
Gypsum is a material, which is in use since 7000 – 6000 B.C. as plaster and cut stone. Since 2000 B.C. gypsum was used as material for stucco. Sculptures and reliefs are made with gypsum similarly to sheets of drywall in our days. The success of conservation of gypsum-sculptures, replica and stucco varies and is also a part of this thesis.
